UROLOGY

The branch of Urology (or Uro-surgery) was developed as an offshoot of general surgery. Many conditions such as urinary stones, enlarged prostate, cancers of urinary tract, congenital defects of urinary tract (birth defects), male infertility etc. were initially managed by general surgeons. However since the sixth decade of the previous century, urology started to emerge as a separate specialty. After the introduction of endoscopes and techniques of endoscopic surgery this offshoot blossomed into a super specialty by itself. No medical institution is complete without a well-developed department of Urology.

The same tradition is followed by Bhaktivedanta Hospital. The department of urology came into existence since the day the hospital started to function. The department is furnished with the state of art modern equipments required to carry out urological operative procedures.

The URO-OT (operation theatre) is furnished with the following equipments:

  1. Latest C-arm image intensifier which is a x-ray unit required for most of the endourological operations.
  2. Cysto-urethroscopes of various sizes required for various different urological procedures. (Manufactured by Karl Storz, Germany).
  3. Ureteroscope and Nephroscope (Manufactured by Richard Wolf, Germany).
  4. Pneumatic Lithoclast required for fragmentation of urinary stones within the urinary tract.
  5. Endo camera with monitor for better visualization of the interior of the urinary tract through the endoscopes.
The department of urology consists of three well-trained, well-experienced and qualified urologists who are in this field since many years and are competent to carry out complicated urological surgeries such as:
  1. Removal of kidney stones by a keyhole surgery called Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy (PCNL)
  2. Removal of ureteric stones endoscopically (Ureteroscopic contact lithotripsy)
  3. Endoscopic removal of bladder stones (Cystolithotrity)
  4. Endoscopic removal of prostate gland or bladder cancer (TUR)
  5. Operations for congenital defects of urinary tract both by open surgery and endoscopic surgery.
  6. Operations for urinary tract cancers.
  7. Kidney transplants.
  8. Operative procedures for male infertility and many other urological surgical procedures.

Various other departments in the hospital such as the X-ray, sonography and C.T scan department, the nephrology & dialysis department, the pathology department are complementary to the urology department for providing the best possible health care to the patients.

The department also takes keen interest in counseling the patients with the matters regarding prevention of urinary stones and cancers, and early detection of prostate cancer.

Every working day of the week we have a urologist visiting the hospital to cater to the patients.
