The Department of Pediatrics at the Bhaktivedanta Hospital & Research Institute was started on 11th January 1998 under the guidance of Dr. N. B. Kumta, Dr. Ajay Sankhe and Dr. Sanjay Prabhu.Since then, the department has grown from 4 beds to 35 beds, with the availability of all major pediatric specialties, making it one of the best centers in North Mumbai for neonatal and child healthcare.
The state-of-the-art NICU, PICU and ward facilities available at the Centre help in dealing with any kind of emergency. Our Centre is equipped with 24x7 radiology and pathological services to diagnose and provide round-the-clock support to the patients. Emergency Ambulance services are available to assist sick children who require immediate care. We are a tertiary care referral center for hospitals and nursing homes in Mumbai for complicated Neonatal (NICU) & Pediatric (PICU) cases - especially for critical patients for multispecialty care under one roof.
Our department manages more than a thousand newborns (including more than hundred premature babies every year) and more than 1500 indoor pediatric patients. The department consists of an experienced team of four dedicated pediatric consultants, 8 pediatric residents and 20 trained pediatric nurses. Our NICU handles premature babies as small as 700 g and 27 weeks of gestation and other newborns with medical, surgical, neurological & cardiac complications with best management protocols, infection control policy and standard of care.
DNB pediatric curriculum was started in June 2019 with a structured and regular academic program. We conduct regular Pediatric CMEs, engaging in conducting research activities and doing regular publications.

- Pediatric ICU (PICU)
- A Pediatric intensive care unit, usually abbreviated to PICU, is an area within a hospital specializing in the care of critically ill infants, children, and teenagers. A PICU is typically directed by one or more pediatric intensivists and staffed by doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists who are specially trained and experienced in pediatric intensive care.
We have four bedded Pediatric intensive care units, for specialized and intensive care of critically ill children of > 1month of age. We have facilities for ventilation, portable x-ray, in house 24 hrs. sonography, 2 D echo, CT scan, MRI and fully equipped lab support. Our teams of intensivists, nursing staff are well trained to handle emergencies and to provide best possible outcomes. We have full support of pediatric subspecialties like neurology, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology and child psychiatry. - Pediatric Orthopedics
- The division of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery strives to bring sub-specialized inpatient and outpatient care to children of all ages, for a wide range of conditions, including developmental, congenital, neuromuscular, and post-traumatic problems of the musculoskeletal system, from general orthopedics, scoliosis and other spinal conditions, hip dysplasia, orthopedic trauma and sports-related injuries. Our outpatient pediatric orthopedic clinics provide on-site radiology examinations. Orthopedic conditions require collaboration and care, which is why our dedicated team collaborates with other pediatric subspecialists, physical therapy and rehabilitation teams to provide complete orthopedic care for our patients.

- Pediatric Ophthalmology
- The Centre for Ophthalmology at Bhaktivedanta Hospital and Research Institute is known as The Teton Family Vision Foundation (TFVF). It is the largest clinical department in the hospital with a maximum number of full-time consultants and staff. We are equipped with skillful and experienced Ophthalmologists with a separate specialties as pediatric ophthalmology. The department functions through a well-equipped OPD, dedicated State-of-the-art Ophthalmic Theatre.Our Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology specialists offer care for children and adolescent eye diseases, including strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), congenital cataracts, nearsightedness/farsightedness and genetic eye diseases. Our pediatric surgeons perform more than 50 strabismus procedures annually for conditions including esotropia, exotropia, cranial nerve palsies, hypertropia and hypotropias, nystagmus and related condition.

- Pediatric Surgery
- Department of Pediatric Surgery deals with surgery for all children from newborn to adolescent up to 18 years. It includes newborn surgery, urology, gastro-intestinal surgery, thoracic surgery, minimal access surgery and Oncology in Children. The department caters to daily outpatient services, inpatient services, Operating Theater 4 days a week and 24 hours emergency services.
- Pediatric Allergy clinic
- A Pediatric Allergy Clinic specializes in diagnosing and managing allergies and immune-related conditions in children, from infancy through adolescence. - Newborn Care Neonatal ICU (NICU)
- A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is an intensive care unit specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. Neonatal refers to the first 28 days of life.We are level IIIA (GPC-2016) Neonatal intensive care unit with 10 bedded modern NICU setup with servo-controlled warmers, oxygen blenders, ventilators, bubble CPAP units, High flow units, phototherapy units, invasive lines and syringe pumps. We provide specialized care for preterm babies (>28 weeks gestation and/or >900 grams) with trained nursing staff. In-house facilities for neurology, neonatal surgeries and diagnostic cardiology are also provided for difficult cases. Difficult cases are being followed up in a specialized OPD ‘High risk clinic’ where they are being given focused and detailed care for healthy development and better outcome.

- Pediatric general ward (PGW) is meant for medical care of ill infants/children/teenagers with wide range of non-life threatening medical and surgical conditions or chronic illnesses.We have facilities for ten beds for pediatric patients for general care with the provision of toys and television. Our staff is kind and cooperative while the child receives medical care.
- Child guidance clinic
- Child guidance clinics are specialized clinics that deal with children of normal and abnormal intelligence, exhibiting a range of behaviors and psychological problems which are summed up maladjustment. The service provides early detection, diagnosis and treatment for children and families who have developed behavioral, emotional, social, speech, language, hearing, and intellectual and communication problems; and provides intervention services, which enhance the development of children. Adults or children identified as needing services not available in the Child Guidance Clinic are provided with appropriate referrals.
- High Risk Clinic
- Improving perinatal and neonatal care has led to increased survival of infants who are at risk for long-term morbidities such as developmental delay and visual/hearing problems. Moreover, many of these neonates (e.g. extremely low birth weight infants) tend to have higher incidence of growth failure and ongoing medical illnesses. A proper and appropriate follow-up program would help in early detection of these problems thus paving way for early intervention.High risk infants’ follow-up requires a multidisciplinary approach involving a team of pediatricians, child psychologist, pediatric neurologist, ophthalmologist, otorhinolaryngologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, medical social worker, and dietician.In this OPD, high risk neonates (NICU graduates) are being followed up regularly, overall assessment is done to ensure that these babies attain their maximum potential overall as they grow.
